COCOA Receives $5,000 Grant From the Chambers Family Foundation

January 8, 2009 – Central Oregon Council on Aging (COCOA) recently received a
grant in the amount of $5,000 from the Chambers Family Foundation, a Eugene based
organization. The grant is an award toward COCOA’s new Centralized Kitchen and,
combined with donations from the community, will help fulfill the need to purchase a
food delivery van for that project.

The centralized kitchen project is just one of the steps recently undertaken by the
agency to save program dollars, and in this case, provide even better services to
seniors living in Central Oregon. Here is how it works.

The COCOA nutrition program provides wholesome meals for seniors prepared by
culinary experts, working under the counsel of certified nutritionists. Meals are served at
meal sites and senior centers throughout the tri-county area. For those who may not be
able to drive, or for health reasons cannot leave their homes, meals are delivered every
day of the week by a tireless corps of dedicated volunteers through the Meals on Wheels
program.

Meals for COCOA’s Madras, Redmond and Sister’s meal sites have been prepared at the
Redmond Senior Center kitchen for some time, while a food catering company has
traditionally provided meals for the outlying locations, as those sites lack adequate
kitchen facilities. Over the years it has become more apparent that one good way to cut
costs, eliminate food waste, control and better utilize food inventories, would be to
prepare food at a localized kitchen and then transport that food to meal sites. The
Centralized Kitchen Project, scheduled to launch in the coming weeks, fulfills that need
while providing better service to clients at the same time.

The grant received from the Chambers Family Foundation will go towards the purchase
of a new delivery van and will augment COCOA’s senior nutrition programs. The van will
be used to transport prepared Meals on Wheels, as well as congregate meals, from the
new centralized kitchen in Redmond to meal sites all across the tri-county area.
CENTRAL OREGON COUNCIL ON AGING ANNOUNCES NEW LEADER

“Pam’s unique experience and clear commitment to a strong mission will help guide
COCOA to a new level. Our board is very enthused about Pam’s leadership skills, her
visionary experience and her common sense approach. COCOA’s employed team is a
committed, dedicated group who will thrive working together as a team, and because
all nonprofits face significant challenges in the upcoming years, we will rely on the
entire COCOA team to help continue to keep the mission and vision of COCOA strong,”
states Paul Svendsen, president of the COCOA board of directors.

“I am honored to be serving in a leadership role at COCOA. The mission of COCOA
and the community members this quality organization serves is something I feel
strongly about and am committed to helping. I look forward to working with the board
and the entire team to develop a long standing and effective organization that will be
vital and serve the community for years to come,” states Norr.

COCOA is the only agency in Central Oregon based at the local level to promote and
support an older person’s ability to lead a dignified, safe, healthy and independent life.
The agency has 23 employees, along with 700 volunteers and provides a variety of
services designed to help keep seniors living independently and in their own homes for
as long as possible. COCOA is one of only two stand-alone AAA (Area Agency on
Aging) non-profit organizations in Oregon. The mission of COCOA is to promote
dignity, well being, security and independence. Services provided by COCOA include
nutrition, meals-on-wheels, in-home services, information and referral, senior center
programs and services, SHIBA Medicare enrollment assistance and the
groundbreaking RSVP – Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.

COCOA Receives $35,000 Wal-Mart Grant

Deschutes County – June 23, 2009 Central Oregon Council on Aging (COCOA) has
received a grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation’s State Giving program. The Wal-Mart
Foundation makes this award of $35,000 in support of COCOA’s Centralized Kitchen
Project.

The State Giving Program strives to award grants to community organizations where it
will have a long-lasting positive impact and for efforts that help solve the unmet needs
of underserved populations, giving individuals access to a better life. COCOA’s
Centralized Kitchen project is one such program.

For more than 33 years Central Oregon Council on Aging has worked to meet the
independent living needs of local seniors. One important aspect of services offered is
the senior nutrition program. In just the past year COCOA has provided healthful hot
meals every day of the week to more than 4,000 individuals in the tri-county area.
Meals are served at local senior centers and meal sites and for those who may not be
able to leave their homes, meals are delivered through the Meals-on-Wheels program
by a tireless corps of dedicated volunteers. The Centralized Kitchen Project, located at
the Redmond Senior Center, supports all of COCOA’s nutrition programs.

Executive Director Dave Hamilton says, “COCOA is honored to be selected for this
grant, which really recognizes our nutrition programs for the important service they
provide seniors and homebound persons in need. The financial support is really needed,
particularly during these difficult economic times. Our staff members, volunteers and the
seniors we serve are all very excited to be able to include The Wal-Mart Foundation in
our family of supporters.”

The funds provided to COCOA through Wal-Mart’s State Giving Program are earmarked
for kitchen equipment, food purchases and expenses associated with food delivery.
