Council on Aging trained Medicare counselors offer free and unbiased help for those signing up for Medicare at age 65 or current Medicare enrollees looking to change their benefits. These volunteers are part of the Oregon Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) program dedicated to educating and advocating for Oregonians with Medicare.

One-on-one phone sessions can help you understand your Medicare benefits, identify and compare health insurance options, and protect you from paying too much for medical care and prescription drugs.

Our Medicare Counselors Can Answer Questions About:

  • Medicare Part A and Part B
  • Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Medicare Part D)
  • Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)
  • Medicare Advantage Plans (HMOs and PPOs)
  • Long-term care insurance
  • Medicare Savings Programs (QMB, SLMB and QI)
  • Prescription drug assistance programs or drug discount cards offered by your state and pharmaceutical companies
  • Medicaid and other insurance programs (including free or reduced-fee health care programs)

You can also read SHIBA counselors’ answers to frequently asked questions (FAQs) that cover general information about options available to Medicare beneficiaries whose providers, or hospital, no longer contract with their Medicare Advantage plan.
